About This Workshop

Join us for an immersive two-day portrait workshop where you'll work from a live life model to master the art of drawing the human face. This is a rare and wonderful opportunity to develop your portrait skills with dedicated guidance and the invaluable experience of working from life.

There's something truly special about drawing from a live model that photographs simply cannot replicate - the three-dimensionality, the subtle plays of light and shadow, the energy and presence of a real person. This workshop gives you the time and space to truly observe and capture the human face.

What You'll Experience

We will have a live life model to work from over both of these sessions, providing you with authentic practice in:

  • Facial Proportions: Understanding the structure and measurements of the human face
  • Feature Placement: Learning where eyes, nose, mouth, and ears sit in relation to each other
  • Capturing Likeness: Developing your ability to see and record individual characteristics
  • Light and Shadow: Using tone to create dimension and form
  • Expression and Character: Going beyond mere accuracy to capture personality
  • Observational Skills: Training your eye to truly see what's in front of you

Your Choice of Medium

You will have charcoal and chalk pastel at your disposal, but if you want to use your own medium that is totally ok - this workshop is all about learning to draw the human face, regardless of your preferred materials.

Provided Materials:

  • Quality drawing paper
  • Charcoal (various grades)
  • Chalk pastels
  • Drawing tools and blending materials

Bring Your Own: If you prefer to work in graphite, conte, coloured pencils, or any other drawing medium, you're absolutely welcome to bring your own materials!

Workshop Structure

Over two comprehensive sessions, you'll have dedicated time to:

  • Day 1: Understanding facial structure, proportion studies, and beginning your portrait work with the live model
  • Day 2: Developing your portrait, refining features and details, and bringing your work to completion

The luxury of two sessions means you can take your time, make corrections, and really develop your skills without rushing.

The Value of Working from Life

Drawing from a live model offers irreplaceable benefits:

  • Three-Dimensional Understanding: See form and structure in real space
  • Natural Lighting: Observe how light naturally falls across features
  • Authentic Observation: Train your eye without the distortion of photography
  • Classical Training: Follow in the footsteps of the masters
  • Engaged Learning: The presence of a model creates focus and energy
  • Professional Practice: Experience how professional artists develop their skills
